Vitamins and Supplements

* Vitamins for stress control

Because of the many side effects of stress medication, a more natural approach to stress relief for managing daily stress such as that caused by work or family-related issues can be achieved by taking vitamins for stress control such as the B complex vitamins and vitamin C. And since stress is a natural part of everyday living, vitamins for stress control are all about stress management rather than stress removal.

While stress is inevitable, it is when stress becomes persistent or unbearable that you should consider taking vitamins for stress control. All the vitamin B group, including B6, B12 and folic acid are important vitamins for stress control, and people suffering stress and anxiety are often found to be deficient in these vitamins. Often during times of stress, antioxidants such as vitamins C and E are found to be depleted. A good multivitamin/mineral supplement is important but try to take extra doses (up to 1,000 mgs) of vitamin C in capsule form, three times a day.

But you need more than just vitamins for stress control, and you should include minerals such as magnesium and zinc. And remember, vitamins and minerals in nutrients are generally better for you than vitamins for stress in pill form. A homeopathic and nutrition supplement called Extress is often effective in helping during periods of stress and anxiety.

* Supplements for stress control

Emotional stress can be relieved with Valerian, a herb from which the drug Valium was derived. Valerian is non-addictive, essentially nontoxic in low doses and has no bad side effects.. Other herbal treatments that have been used to reduce symptoms of anxiety or depression, both often associated with stress, include: Hops, which help ease nervousness, restlessness and stress as well as decreasing the desire for alcohol.; chamomile, known as a gentle relaxant and a good nerve tonic and one of the best supplements for stress control; and catnip, an effective herbal remedy that relieves stress and reduces anxiety.

Like any other treatment, supplements for stress control must be taken in the recommended doses. And they may have side effects or interactions with other medications. If you do try supplements for stress control, discuss this with your doctor. Guidance on the appropriate doses and preparations, so that they do not interfere with your other medications, is essential.
